RAMADAN …… the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection, and community. A commemoration of Muhammad’s first revelation, the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islamand lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.

Fasting from dawn to sunset is fard (obligatory) for all adult Muslims who are not acutely or chronically ill, traveling, elderly, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating. The predawn meal is referred to as suhur, and the nightly feast that breaks the fast is called iftar. Although fatwas have been issued declaring that Muslims who live in regions with a midnight sun or polar night should follow the timetable of Mecca, it is common practice to follow the timetable of the closest country in which night can be distinguished from day.

The spiritual rewards (thawab) of fasting are believed to be multiplied during Ramadan. Accordingly, during the hours of fasting Muslims refrain not only from food and drink, but also tobacco products, sexual relations, and sinful behavior, devoting themselves instead to salat (prayer) and study of the Quran.

In other words, Ramadan is to be a very spiritual time for Muslims, a time of prayer, reflection, and becoming a better servant to their god, Allah. What Ramadan is not, is a time for war, committing crimes such as murder, theft, rape (rape is considered a serious sexual crime in Islam; rape is called Zina Al-Zibr or Ightisab, and it falls under the rules of Hirabah. To prove hirabah, two witnesses must testify or there must be a confession. In addition, an offender can still escape the death penalty if he repents before he is arrested and willingly places himself in the hands of the authorities.) theft, or other sins.

ISI/DI: That a church would open its doors to Muslims is a wonderful thing. To be able to demonstrate the love of Christ, share how we worship, and display the Christianity of the Bible.

Invite one or a dozen to church and share in our worship. But, no, not to open our sanctuaries to Ramadan. We/Christians are not Muslims; we do not believe in their god, Allah, or their holy books, nor do we share in their manner of worship or beliefs.

Want to share together in Ramadan with Muslims? Rent space from a local “American Legion” facility or a large room in a restaurant. Just be sure they know what you are doing, as some may be opposed, and it would be a mistake to have an outburst later on.

But, not in our houses of worship.

ISI/DI: Ditto …… double ditto. Again, invite them to a church service, but I would caution that it not be done on special religious days, especially, Easter, unless lots of groundwork has been laid. The one and perhaps biggest area of misunderstanding has to do with the Trinity. There just seems to be some type of block when it comes to worshipping the Trinity. Muslims simply are not able to put their arms around the concept. They do not have a faith that allows an understanding of the Trinity, and unless you really want to alienate a Muslim, find another time to invite them to a worship service. Irreparable damage may occur.j

ISI/DI: I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been to and through the U.K. We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary traveling around England and Scotland. Now, though, it sounds like the Brits have walked along the slippery slope and fallen in, head-first.

Sadiq Khan, a Muslim, is in his second term as mayor of London, which has no restrictions on term limits. Mr. Khan is not the only Muslim to serve in a political office in the U.K. Over the past two and a half decades, there have been nearly two dozen Muslims to hold political office. Still, hundreds of others have held positions in education, medicine, business, finance, science, the arts, etc.

There was a 2019 media headline which read, “Record number of Muslims enter British parliament. Despite rising anti-Muslim sentiment, the 2019 election saw the highest number of Muslim candidates ever enter parliament.” The number — 19 Muslims took office.

The latest elected official is Scotland’s new First Minister, Humza Yousaf, whom it has already been said is speaking with the leadership of Hamas. His intentions can only be speculative at this point.

The law (scroll to the top), Shari’a, was very clear that rape is a sin. However, the Qur’an does allow rape of slaves and also that wives — not, should not, but, do not – withhold from their husbands.
