Chapter 11
QUALITY CONTROL
Introduction
IT COSTS MONEY when a job is not done right the first time. The habit of
doing things right must become routine otherwise you spend all your time fighting, finding, and fixing. The responsibility for quality control begins with the owner/manager. You must set the pace and model quality or else your employees will not catch the idea. People perform to the standard of their leaders. They rise to the level of expectation as well as sink to the level of acceptance.
Quality means conformance to set requirements. It means excellence. As Christian business people we have a responsibility to build quality and excellence into our businesses. If you don’t, not only can it be a poor testimony, but your business will suffer. The Research Institute of America has stated that 96 percent of unhappy customers never complain about discourtesy, but up to 91percent will not buy again from the business that offended them. In addition, the average unhappy customer will tell his or her story to at least nine other people and 13 percent of unhappy customers will tell more than 20 people. So it is not only important that you build quality into your product, but into your relationships as well. It has also been established that by concentrating on quality you can increase your profit by 5 to 10 percent. God wants to see us as shining lights in the communities in which He has planted us.
What The Bible Says About Quality And Excellence
”And whatever you do, whether in word or deed} do it all in the name cf the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (COLOSSIANS 3:17). ”So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God ” (I CORINTHIANS 10:31).
In a sense your product not only has the brand name that you have selected, but has Jesus’ name on it. If your product falls apart and the customer does not get his money’s worth it reflects on the testimony that you carry in the community. God wants excellence in every area of our lives so that His name is honored. If our talk and our walk don’t match then it is a questionable testimony. Whatever you do, may it bring Him glory. Therefore excellence of life in every area is to reflect Him. So what we should ask is, ”Does the work of my hands and those of my workers bring glory to God?”
“Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddin; she was from Jerusalem. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly” (II CHRONICLES 2521-2).
Amaziah did what was right and that was good. But he did not do it with his whole heart. He just got by. Excellence was not a part of his reign and he
and the people that he led paid for it. ”The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied” (PROVERBS 13:4). Diligence or constant effort is rewarded by satisfaction. When you are diligent in producing a quality product and excellence in performance, it not only brings satisfaction, but profit. It has been said that the difference between something good and something great is attention to detail. The sluggard says, ”That’s good enough to get by. No need to work too hard.” He never does his best and misses out on the inward satisfaction of a job well done and the blessing of increased profits.
How To Excel At Whatever You Do
”Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:16). ”Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators … by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom” (DANIEL 6:3).
A. Work With Enthusiasm
”Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (COLOSSIANS 3:23). ”As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him” (PROVERBS 10:26). ”One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys” (PROVERBS 18:9). ”Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (ROMANS 12:11).
B. Keep Your Word
”Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find?” (PROVERBS 20:6). ”Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble” (PROVERBS 25:19). ”Obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord ”(COLOSSIANS 3:22).
C. Maintain A Positive Attitude
”Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children cf God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe” (PHILIPPIANS 2:14-15).
D. Do More Than Is Expected
“If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (MATTHEW 5:41). ”A man’s work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and thefire will test the quality of each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames” (I CORINTHIANS 3:13-15).
