There are four Middle East countries who have already made this designation – Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). There are also other countries who have done so, but what matters now is that the United States has finally stepped up.
Additionally, the organization is banned in Syria and Jordan.
These designations are largely politically motivated, as these governments view the organization’s populist Islamist ideology and potential for rising to power through elections as a threat to their own stability and system of dynastic rule. Other countries, such as Qatar and Turkey, have provided political backing to Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated groups.
The Muslim Brotherhood maintains it is a peaceful, democratic organization that has formally abandoned violence. However, offshoots like the Palestinian militant group Hamas continue to use violence and are internationally recognized as terrorist organizations.
